Today, EFF published "Privacy Without Monopoly: Data Protection and Interoperability," a major new paper by Bennett Cyphers and me.
It's a paper that tries to resolve the tension between demanding that tech platforms gather, retain and mine less of our data, and the demand that platforms allow alternatives (nonprofits, co-ops, tinkerers, startups) to connect with their services.
Looks like we'll need authentication of any kind of external code - which upon writing it seems completely obvious.
How lazy we have become...
There is no such thing as a backdoor that only lets the good guys in. Together with Tresorit, @threemaapp and Tutanota, we are calling on EU policy makers to rethink anti-encryption proposals that would introduce backdoors in encryption platforms: https://protonmail.com/blog/joint-statement-eu-encryption/
Today, in a hearing at the Danish parliament, the minister of justice admitted that the Danish telcos could not be prosecuted or otherwise punished for ceasing the general and undifferentiated logging it has upheld for mere than a decade - despite several rulings from EUCJ against it.
A great day for privacy in Denmark!
In Pasco County, police assign crime scores to people, including minors, who they think might commit crimes—then harass them for years.
This predictive policing program is “the worst case scenario in our head, played out exactly,” says EFF's @mguariglia.

I'm exceptionally hyped by the amazing tech Paul Frazee and team are building. 🤩
If you care about a decentralized web, this is something to watch.
Regardless of what you think of Julian Assange, this is a welcome win for press freedom and human rights. I hope he is released post haste, can return to his family, and can claim compensation from all involved governments for his inhumane treatment.
Just ran the same WebSocket load tests with #SiteJS on a 2 vCPU VPS with 2GB RAM and it started dropping messages (1 message/sec) at around 10K concurrent connections.
I’m more than happy with that as a starting point. (That’s not what we need to optimise. For context, I have 7.24K followers on the fediverse after 3 years. We won’t start hitting those limits on the #SmallWeb for a while.) ;)

🎉 It is time! #Mastodon 3.3.0 is here! What's in it? Have a look:
Dear web developers and admins,
please stop embedding Google's hideous #ReCaptcha into your websites. Its algorithm is faulty, forcing regular users to click dozens or even hundreds of fire hydrants, bicycles, or traffic lights each day. It puts a 'suspicious activity' flag on users who won't obey to Google's business model - such as people who don't sign into Chrome, use anonymity VPNs, or use browser extensions to suppress common tracking mechanisms. Enough is enough. Stop it.
